It's winter - ever wonder where your flowers are from?

As we shiver in our thick coats here in New York, it's not the ideal time of year to pick fresh flowers from your backyard or the local farmer's field. Luckily, that doesn't mean there aren't local flowers, it just means you have to look little harder. Le Fleuriste has done just that, so you need look no further. ;)
For example, of the 224 million roses sold around Valentine's day in the U.S., only 2% are American grown. Two thirds of American flower farms have gone out of business in the last two and a half decades due to the pressure of favorably priced imports. But, by being an active part of the conscious 2% of informed consumers, you can make a real difference. The difference is visible in the vase.
Hot on the heels of the Slow Food movement, the Slow Flowers movement is actively reclaiming and explaining just how possible and essential it is to sustainably source American grown flowers. The reasons are identical to food. They have travelled less, last longer and have more 'life' to them. They have been picked at their prime using noble growing practices, so they’re safer for both you and the environment, supporting a local economy of diversified farmers. Last but not least, there are often interesting varieties that the large industrial growers don't take the risk to grow.
Deli flowers vs. farm flowers. Imports vs. local.
It's not difficult to make a conscious choice.
